6 Things to Do When You Purchased a New Computer

So, you just purchased a new computer. Congratulations, now it’s time to set it up. We all have our own unboxing ceremonies and set up rituals, but there are some essential things that have to be done before you can get down to actually using that new machine.

1. Complete System Update

Most operating systems will have undergone several patches before you even have turned on your new computer. Check for updates and install them before you do anything else, for the security and functionality of your computer.

2. Security Set Up

Check the security setting on your computer. The defaults are usually either too lax or too rigid, and you’ll probably want to change them. Make sure you switch permissions for installing any software so that it requires an administrator’s consent. It’s also a good idea to install a trusted virus scan program, establish a firewall and set up and ad-blocker. For laptops it is also a good idea to set up a tracking system, in the event that your computer is lost or stolen.

3. Remove Clutterware

It’s a fact, new computers are going to come out of the box already loaded down with garbage apps and clutterware. These are programs you are likely never going to use, and they are just going to take up space and affect your computer’s performance. Ditch them.

4. Import Your Programs and Files

Since your computer is no longer full of clutter, you can fill it with what matters to you. Take the time to install your most used programs ahead of time, so they're there for you when you need them.

5. Set Up Your Backup

Now that you have everything just the way you like it, make sure it stays that way. An external hard drive with a grounded power source (one that plugs into the wall) is an essential computer accessory.

6. Change Your Background

Make your house feel like a home.

Now that you’ve gone through this process, purchased a new computer, properly secured it, and set it up to suit your needs, it’s time to sit back and actually enjoy it!
